Description
Data refer to seven sites selected, following the experience achieved with the monitoring programme and the analysis of a dystrophic crisis event in 2008, along a gradient from the western to the eastern basin of the lagoon. For each sampling site three replicates of benthic samples were collected by a box corer (0.1 meters squared sampling surface), all benthic samples were sieved through 1 mm screen and fixed in 4% buffered formalin. In the laboratory, all macroinvertebrates from sediment cores were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level, counted, measured (body length) and their body mass determined. Identification and biometry of every individual was carried out under Leica MZ6 stereoscopes. The macroinvertebrates were determined with reference to Bellan-Santini et al., (1982 and 1993) for Amphipoda, Argano (1979) for Isopoda, Poppe and Goto (1991) for Mollusca, Viéitez et al. (2004) and San Martìn (2003) for Polychaeta and Campaioli et al. (1994) for other taxa. Linear measurements of body size were obtained to the nearest 0.01 mm using a Leica MZ12 stereoscope and an image analysis software (Leica Qwin, Leica, Germany). The individuals larger than 20 mm were measured with callipers to the nearest 0.5 mm. Body length measurements, carried out on whole individuals, were performed in accordance with standard procedures available in the literature for the different taxa sampled in this study. Total body length was measured for Hirudinea and Oligochaeta. For Insecta, Crustacea and Polychaeta body length was measured as the distance from the anterior part of the head to the end of the last abdominal segment (excluding cerci, antennae and other appendages). Body length was measured as total shell height for Gastropoda and as valve length at the longest point for Bivalvia. All individuals were then oven-dried to constant weight for at least 72 h at 60 °C and then weighted to the nearest 1 mg on a Sartorius (MC 5) micro- analytic balance. Mass data were expressed as ash-free dry mass (AFDM) after muffle furnace combustion at 500 °C for 6 h. In order to optimise the ash content assessment, for large or abundant species, the ash content was determined on single individuals or on species samples partitioned into three size classes. For all other species, which were the majority, all individuals in the same taxonomic category were pooled together.

Sampling

Sampling Description
The sampling was performed in september 2009 in seven sites along a gradient from the western to the eastern basin of the Lesina lagoon. For each sampling site three replicates of benthic samples were collected by a box corer (0.1 meters squared sampling surface), all benthic samples were sieved through 1 mm screen and fixed in 4% buffered formalin.
