Description
The study was performed using the leaf packs technique (Petersen and Cummins, 1974) at 17 sites distributed throughout the hydrographic basin, among varying stream branches, orders, classes of altitude and distance from the river mouth, in two seasons (Fall-Winter and Spring-Summer). Phragmites australis leaves were collected along the banks of the river Flumendosa in September, cut into 10 cm-long pieces, oven-dried at 60°C for 72 h, weighed into 5.0 ± 0.1 g lots and enclosed in nylon bags (0.5 cm mesh size). In Fall-Winter and in Spring-Summer 12 bags were distributed at each station, anchored to rocks and exposed for 30-days. After 30 days, the leaf packs were retrieved from the study sites and placed in a plastic bag, sealed and returned to the laboratory in an insulated cool box.

Description
The leaf material was carefully washed in flowing water and sieved in an 800 ?m mesh size sieve in order to remove both organic and inorganic sediments and benthic macroinvertebrates. All animals were identified to the genus level, and, whenever possible, to species level, counted, measured (body length) and their body mass determined.

The sampling design was as follows: 2 seasons, 17 stations and 12 Leaf packs for station.
