The InBIO Barcoding Initiative Database: Lacewings (Neuroptera) 02

The dataset contains 349 records of Lacewings (Neuroptera) species collected from 2006 to 2019 in continental Portugal. Specimens were detected and captured by direct search of the environment and by using both UV and mercury-vapor lamps to attract the insects. Captured specimens were preserved in 96% ethanol. All captured specimens were identified to species level. The dataset “The InBIO Barcoding Initiative Database: Lacewings (Neuroptera) 02” is part of a group of Neuroptera datasets published by the InBIO Barcoding Initiative (IBI). The first dataset, “The InBIO Barcoding Initiative Database: Lacewings (Neuroptera) 01” (doi.org/10.15468/6cyrxd), has already been made available through GBIF. IBI is funded by the EnvMetaGen and PORBIOTA projects. All specimens are deposited in the IBI collection at the CIBIO (Research Center in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources).

Taxonomic Coverage

General Taxonomic Coverage
This dataset is composed of data relating to 349 Neuroptera specimens belonging to 38 species, that represent almost half of the species known from continental Portugal. These species are representative of five of the ten families of Neuroptera known from continental Portugal. The families with the highest number of recorded specimens and species diversity are the Chrysopidae (142 records, 19 species) and the Myrmeleontidae (143 records, 10 species).

Abstract
The InBIO Barcoding Initiative aims to develop a reference collection of DNA barcoding sequences covering Portuguese invertebrate taxa. Within the project, a special focus is afforded to insects, given their relevance to food webs, ecosystems functioning, high diversity and limited number of DNA barcoding sequences of interest.
Funding
InBIO Barcoding Initiative is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme under grant agreement No 668981 and by the project PORBIOTA — Portuguese E-Infrastructure for Information and Research on Biodiversity (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-022127), supported by Operational Thematic Program for Competitiveness and Internationalization (POCI), under the PORTUGAL 2020 Partnership Agreement, through the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER). The fieldwork benefited from EDP Biodiversity Chair, the project “Promoção dos serviços de ecossistemas no Parque Natural Regional do Vale do Tua: Controlo de Pragas Agrícolas e Florestais por Morcegos” funded by the Agência de Desenvolvimento Regional do Vale do Tua, and includes research conducted at the Long Term Research Site of Baixo Sabor (LTER_EU_PT_002).

Study Area Description

Descriptor

Specimens were collected in 10 continental Portugal administrative districts . Eighty-five different localities were sampled. Sampling was conducted from 2006 to 2019, with 70% of specimens (52.5%) collected in the year 2018.

Design Description

Description
The specimens in this dataset were collected in field work incursions carried out between 2006 and 2019, encompassing several sites throughout continental Portugal in an attempt to have a good representation of the country’s Neuroptera fauna. All specimens were morphologically identified.

Methods

• Method

Method Step

Description
Specimens were collected in 85 different localities of continental Portugal. Field work was carried out between 2006 and 2019, with 70% of the records obtained in 2018.

Method Step

Description
Specimens were collected by direct search of the sampling site while also using both UV LED and mercury-vapor lamps as lures distributed along the site. Specimens were preserved in 96% alcohol and deposited in the IBI reference collection.

Method Step

Description
Specimens were morphologically identified using a stereoscopic microscope and resorting to available literature (Monserrat, 2014a, 2014b, 2014c, 2015, 2016a, 2016b; Monserrat and Acevedo, 2013; Monserrat et al., 2012a; 2012b, 2014).

Method Step

Description
Prior submission to GBIF, data was checked for errors and inconsistencies with OpenRefine 3.4 (http://openrefine.org/).

Sampling

Study Extent

Specimens were collected in 85 localities of continental Portugal. Sampling was conducted from 2006 to 2019, in several field work expeditions. More than two-thirds of the specimens (70%) were collected in the year 2018.

Sampling Description
Sampling of specimens encompassed 85 localities of continental Portugal. Sampling was conducted between 2006 and 2019. Specimens were captured by direct search of the environment and by using both UV LED and mercury-vapor lamps to attract the insects. Specimens were preserved in 96% ethanol and stored at the InBIO Barcoding Initiative (IBI) reference collection.
