Method Step

Description
Four sampling stations were located in the Acquatina lagoon at increasing distances from the inlet, following a gradient of confinement from station 1 to station 4. Fish were collected by letting down a fyke net for 24 h. The net was made up of three hoop-nets equipped with wings, set up radially at the end of a 20-m-long blocking net tethered to the shore. Each hoop net had two funnels, and a mesh size ranging from 12 mm for the wings to 6 mm for the cod end.

Method Step

Description
Fish were carried to the laboratory, sorted and frozen. Subsequently, individuals were identified at the species level and counted, measured (Standard Length, SL: ±1 mm) and weighed (Wet Weight, WW: ±0.001 g). For each species a sub-sample of individuals was dried in an oven at 60 °C to constant weight (DW: ±0.001 g ‚ 0.01 mg depending on individual WW) to compute wetweight/dry-weight relationships. Average species ash content was determined after muffle furnace combustion at 500 °C for 6 h, in order to obtain individual ash-free dry masses (AFDM).

Sampling

Study Extent

Four sampling stations were located in the Acquatina lagoon at increasing distances from the inlet, following a gradient of confinement from station 1 to station 4. Sampling was carried out twice per month, from June 2007 to May 2008, except August when only one sampling was performed at the end of the month, making a total of 23 sampling times.

Name
totallength
Definition
Total length is the distance between the most anteriorly projecting part of the head (jaws closed) and the most distant tip of the caudal fin. In Europe, for measurement, the caudal fin has to be spread into a natural position; i.e., the two lobes of fishes with a forked tail fin are not pressed together.
