Description
The sampling strategy was based on leaf pack technique. The leaves used as detritus were Phragmites australis. Before sampling, leaf packs (5 mm mesh size) were filled with 3.000 + 0.005 g of oven-dried leaves (60 °C, 72 h). Samplings were carried out seasonally at 14 study sites distributed along the main axis and its tributaries. Seasonally, 20 leaf packs of Phragmites australis were placed in each study site, fixed to the stream bottom with a nylon rope. Before sampling, litter bags (5 mm mesh size) were filled with 3.000 + 0.005 g of oven-dried leaves (60 °C, 72 h). The Phragmites australis packs were retrieved after 30 days of continuous submersion. Leaf packs sampled were placed in separate plastic containers and rapidly brought to the laboratory, where the leaves were gently washed with tap water to remove sediments and macroinvertebrate colonizers. The macroinvertebrates were sampled on the collected leaf packs at each time of collecting. Biometric measures and mass were determined for each individual. The total length of each individual was measured with an image analysis system (binocular Leica MZ 125, photo-camera Leica IC A, software Leica Qwin), and the dry mass was measured on a micro-balance ± 0.001 mg (Sartorius MC 5) after oven desiccation at 60 °C for 72 h. The total body length was measured excluding: i) antenna, telson and uropods in crustaceans; ii) mandibles, palpes and cerci in insects. The gasteropods were measured along the columella. The ash content was determined with gravimetric techniques after combustion in a muffle furnace at 500 °C for 6 h. Therefore, all dry masses were expressed as biomass (ash free dry mass, AFDM).

Sampling

Sampling Description
The sampling design was as follows: 4 seasons, 14 sampling sites, 20 leaf packs for sampling site.
