EDP Baixo Sabor: Construction and Reservoir Filling Phases - Riparian Birds, priority conservation species: fixed points complementary observations - [2010-2014]
The dataset contains records of riparian bird species (Aves) of high conservation priority, collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of surveys made in and around the area affected by the dam, from February 2010 to September 2014. Data consists of observations of the target species (the Kingfisher and the Dipper) performed in fixed sampling points or transects directed to riparian birds, as well as additional observations. Observations came from all the study area around the Sabor river, from its mouth up to 42 km upstream. The presence and identity of bird species were assessed by visual and/or acoustic observation, with the support of binoculars. The records include taxa identified at the species level.

Study Area Description
- Descriptor
-
The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of the river Sabor affected by the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams. Occasional observations of riparian birds were made in suitable habitats in 42 5x5 km squares centered in the margins of Sabor river and up to 42 km from its mouth.
Design Description
- Description
-
The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the distribution patterns and abundances of riparian species of high conservation priority (Kingfisher and Dipper) in the area of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dam, from the intermediate phase of the construction to the reservoir filling period (2010-2014). This dataset provides observations collected both in regular surveys, and occasional observations of the target species outside the systematic monitoring program involving fixed observation points and transects.

Sampling
- Study Extent
-
The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the margins of the lower valley of river Sabor and its main tributaries, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro and Macedo de Cavaleiros.
- Sampling Description
-
The dataset includes both systematic and non-systematic observations using binoculars made in the sampling points and transects used in the regular monitoring program of riparian birds, and in additional locations throughout the Sabor river sub-basin. The systematic observations followed the methodology used for the general censuses of the riparian birds. At each count point, a 10-minute count session was performed, in which all birds detected by sight or sound were recorded. Non-systematic observations were taken by opportunistic encounters with the target species. The identification was made "in loco", with appropriate field guides.
