Body Mass Service
The Body Mass Service estimates individual animal body mass from body length using an extensive database of length-weight relationships aggregated at the taxonomic order level. Based on the taxonomic order and body-length measurement type provided by the user, the service applies quality-controlled allometric coefficients to estimate body mass for the available weight types, including wet weight, dry weight, and ash-free dry weight.

Filtering of regression coefficients
- Description
-
This step applies a set of quality filters to the original database of length–weight relationships. The goal is to remove unreliable or biologically implausible regressions before aggregation. Filters are based on goodness-of-fit (R²) and acceptable ranges of the coefficients 𝑎 and 𝑏. Only regressions meeting minimum statistical and biological criteria are retained.

Order-level coefficient estimation
- Description
-
This step derives representative length–weight coefficients at the taxonomic level of order for each combination of order, measurementType, and weight. When available, regressions already computed at the order level are preferred. Otherwise, coefficients are estimated by averaging values from lower taxonomic ranks (family, genus, species).

Body mass estimation
- Description
-
This step calculates body mass from input length values using the order-level coefficients derived in Step 2. For each input record, body mass is estimated for all available weight types (e.g. AFDW, DW, WW), ensuring transparency and avoiding arbitrary selection of a single weight definition.
