    <abstract>The dataset includes two data tables for biotic and abiotic data of Umbrian lakes. The biotic data table contains phytoplankton species density values (cells/L) and biomass expressed as biovolume (µm³/L). These data were collected between 2009 and 2022 with a bimonthly sampling frequency. The abiotic data table includes bimonthly measurements of physico-chemical environmental parameters, such as alkalinity, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, dissolved organic carbon, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH, depth, silica, water and air temperature, and transparency. Data were collected at 9 sampling sites across 8 water bodies in the Umbria region as part of the environmental monitoring activities carried out by ARPA Umbria. The monitored water bodies include 8 lakes: 2 natural lakes (Lake Trasimeno and Lake Colfiorito) and 6 heavily modified water bodies (HMWBs).</abstract>

        <description>Surface water monitoring was carried out as part of the institutional environmental monitoring activities conducted by ARPA Umbria. Sampling and analytical procedures followed the standardized methods adopted for the monitoring of surface waters, in accordance with the principles and requirements of the Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) and related national and regional implementing regulations. Phytoplankton samples were collected at bimonthly intervals and analyzed to determine species composition, density (cells L⁻¹), and biomass expressed as biovolume (µm³ L⁻¹), following established protocols for ecological status assessment. Physico-chemical parameters, including water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, transparency, nutrients (total nitrogen and total phosphorus), alkalinity, silica, and dissolved organic carbon, were measured concurrently using standard field and laboratory methods routinely applied in surface water monitoring programs. All data were produced within quality assurance and quality control procedures required for official monitoring activities.</description>

      <abstract>All major regional waterways and lakes are constantly monitored to assess their ecological and chemical status and to identify any critical issues that could jeopardise the achievement of the environmental objective set by the Water Framework Directive (good status). At the end of 2023, the first three years of the six-year cycle 2021-2026 came to an end and all the data collected was analysed and processed to determine the environmental quality of Umbria's surface waters. The results of the classifications made it possible to update the knowledge base on the ecological and chemical status of the regional hydrographic network and on the impacts generated by specific and widespread anthropogenic pressures, in support of sector planning.</abstract>
