    <abstract>
      <para>Land Surface Phenology describes vegetation changes observed from satellite remote sensing and constitutes therefore an aggregate signal from heterogeneous surface conditions that may not be representative of any single plant species response. LSP indicates the timing, date of occurrence, and corresponding value of the vegetation index used, of key phases of the vegetation development cycle. In particular, phenological metrics related to the start, end of growing season, length of the season and maximum development, seasonal total and partly integrals (as productivity parameters), as well as growth and senescence rated, intra-annual coefficient of variation, etc. are provided.</para>

          <para>
            The input data for the LSP estimation are global 5-day PPI time series calculated from PROBA-V and Sentinel-3/OLCI BRDF normalized top-of-canopy reflectances (TOC-r) in the red band and in the near infrared (NIR) band. The BRDF algorithm normalizes the TOC-r to the nadir viewing at 10:00AM local solar time. Besides using the red and NIR bands of TOC-r BRDF data in the Plant Phenology Index (PPI) calculation, the product uses the quality information layer which provides information on the quality of the BRDF-correction.The PPI data are fed through to TIMESAT 4.2 for smoothing, computation of phenology and productivity parameters, and derivation of quality flags. The product is based on Copernicus Sentinel-3 data (copyright governed by the Legal notice on the use of Copernicus Sentinel Data and Service Information -
