Method Step
- Description
-
The study was performed using leaf packs of Phragmites australis and was carried out at 33 sampling sites. The fieldwork was carried out over a year from fall 1998 to summer 1999 and data were collected at two times from the start of the experiments in each season (30 days and 90 days of submersion reported in the dataset as "measurementremarks"). Leaves of P. australis were collected during the spring-summer period, air-dried and stored in a dark room at standard temperature and low humidity until needed. Before use, leaves were cut into 8-cm-long fragments and oven-dried to constant weight (60 °C for 72 h), and then lots of 3.0 ± 0.1 g dry weight were placed in 5 mm mesh bags. For each season, 16 leaf packs were submersed at each sampling station and collected in two sampling times: after 30 and 90 days from the beginning of the experiment.
Method Step
- Description
-
The leaf packs were retrieved from the study sites and placed in a plastic bag, sealed and returned to the laboratory in an insulated cool box. The leaf material was carefully washed in flowing water and sieved in an 800 micrometer mesh size sieve in order to remove both organic and inorganic sediments and benthic macroinvertebrates. All animals were identified to the genus level, and, whenever possible, to species level, counted, and their body mass determined.
Sampling
- Study Extent
-
The sampling design was as follows: 4 seasons, two sampling times for season, 33 sampling stations and 16 leaf packs for sampling station.
