EDP Baixo Sabor: Construction and Reservoir Filling Phases – Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis and Dipper (Cinclus cinclus) - [2010-2014]
The dataset contains records of Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) and Dipper (Cinclus cinclus) (Aves) collected in the lower catchment of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of surveys made in and around the area affected by the dams, from August 2010 to September 2014. Sampling was performed in transects distributed along the lower Sabor river valley (and some tributaries) and in rivers Maçãs and Angueira, from the Sabor mouth up to 42 km upstream. The presence and identity of bird species were assessed by visual and/or acoustic observation, with binoculars. The records include taxa identified at the species level.

- Abstract
-
The dataset contains records of Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) and Dipper (Cinclus cinclus) (Aves) collected in the lower catchment of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of surveys made in the area affected by the dams, from August 2010 to September 2014. Sampling was performed in a total of 66 sampling transects along the river Sabor and some tributaries, and in rivers Maçãs and Angueira. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 138 observation events (127 of Kingfisher and 11 of Dipper). Two Kingfisher nests were also spotted.

Study Area Description
- Descriptor
-
The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Sabor affected by the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for Kingfisher and Dipper in 1x1 km squares centered in the lower Sabor river valley and some tributaries, and in rivers Maçãs and Angueira, from the sabor river mouth up to 42 km upstream.
Design Description
- Description
-
The objective of the study was to detect nests and to monitor changes in the distribution patterns and abundances of Common Kingfisher and Dipper, in the area of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams during the construction and reservoir filling periods (2009-2014).

Sampling
- Study Extent
-
The data were collected in a single transect near the river in each 1x1 km square, along the valley of the lower Sabor river, some of its tributaries, and in rivers Maçãs and Angueira, fom the river mouth up to 42 km upstream, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro e Macedo de Cavaleiros.
- Sampling Description
-
Sampling was designed to cover the whole valley of the lower Sabor river, its tributaries and rivers Maçãs and Angueira, in habitats suitable for the Kingfisher and the Dipper (riparian galleries, stream pools). A total of 66 transects distributed in a grid of 1x1 km squares was set. Each transect of around 100 meters, was walked by one observer during 10 minutes. All birds detected by sight or sound, as well as nest sites observed or potential, were recorded. The identification was made "in loco" by experienced observers, with the support of appropriate field guides.
