Abstract

The dataset contains records of aquatic fauna (mainly fishes) collected in the River Tua and its tributaries Tuela and Tinhela, as well as in the rivers Torto, Távora, Tedo and Pinhão in the Douro river basin within the Compensatory Measures Program (2017-2027) of the Exploitation Phase of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in the spring 2017 in 24 sampling stations distributed along the concerned rivers. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 665 records of individuals. The most abundant fish species (>100 records) were Pseudochondrostoma duriense (178 individuals), Luciobarbus bocagei (159), Squalius carolitertii (145) and Squalius alburnoides (103). Other taxa seen/captured were larval stages of Insecta (Orders Plectoptera, Ephemeroptera and Trichoptera) (22 individuals/observations) and Galemys pyrenaicus (3 individuals/observations).

The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A. The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A.

Study Area Description

Descriptor

The study was conducted in the sub-basins of rivers Tua (rivers Tua - upstream the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam - Tinhela and Tuela) and Douro (rivers Torto, Pinhão, Távora and Tedo, and Leomil stream).

Design Description

Description

The objective of the study was to describe the diversity and genetic structure of fish populations occurring in sectors of water courses identified as potential donors and/or recipients within the scope of the translocation program provided for in Element 24 of the AHFT.

Study Extent

The data were collected along the River Tua (Northeast Portugal) and two of its main tributaries (Tinhela and Tinhela), up to 52 kms from the mouth, in the municipalities of Alijó, Carrazeda de Ansiães, Murça, Vila Flor, Mirandela, Macedo de Cavaleiros and Vila Pouca de Aguiar, and in rivers Torto, Távora, Tedo and Pinhão, in the Douro basin, in the municipalities of S. João da Pesqueira, Tabuaço and Armamar.

Sampling Description

The harvesting at each location were carried out using electric fishing, based on standardized procedures (INAG, 2008). The fishes’ captures were carried out against the current, in the downstream-upstream direction, involving a team of four elements, including an operator of the electric fishing net, an assistant with a hand-held net to collect individuals, and two assistants to ensure safety and help in sample processing. In each location, a river section of about 50-100m in length was prospected, and individuals of the target species captured were kept.

Priority was given to adult individuals of each species, collected as much as possible from different points of the river, in order to reduce the risk of collection of related individuals who could introduce bias in the genetic analyses. From each individual, a small portion of tissue from the dorsal fin was cut, stored in an eppendorf tube with ethanol analysis (96%) and properly labeled. Each individual was also measured (total length) and photographed. Collection methods and conservation have already been properly tested in previous works by CIBIO-InBIO. At the end of the campaign, the samples collected were kept in stable temperature conditions, stored and transported to the laboratory. The locations of all samples were georeferenced with the aid of a GPS device and subsequently processed in a GIS environment.
