EDP Foz-Tua: Large and Medium-sized Mammals (occasional observations): Complementary Studies [2009-10]
The dataset contains records of large and medium-sized mammals (Mammalia: Carnivora, Chiroptera, Cetartiodactyla and Lagomorpha) collected in the lower valley of the River Tua, and included in the Complementary Studies (2009-10) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between November 2009 and March 2010 in a non-systematic way in 20 2x2 km UTM squares on the area of the lower Tua valley directly or indirectly affected by the Foz Tua dam. The presence of individuals was recorded mainly through the detection presence signs such as scats, tracks, etc.

- Abstract
-
The dataset contains records of large and medium-sized mammals (Mammalia: Carnivora, Chiroptera, Cetartiodactyla and Lagomorpha) collected in plots along the lower Tua River, and included in the Complementary Studies of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between November 2009 and March 2010, in a non-systematic way in 20x20 km UTM squares, within a 5-km buffer around the lower Tua River valley.
The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 74 observation events in 64 sampling points. In total, nine taxa were identified to species rank. The most abundant species (>10 individuals/signs of presence) were Sus scrofa (30) and Vulpes vulpes (24).

Study Area Description
- Descriptor
-
The study was conducted in part of the sub-basins of river Tua, prior to the construction and subsequent flooding of the lower part of this river valley by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for the target species found in a 5-km radius buffer around the future reservoir banks, and up to 35 km from the Tua mouth.
Design Description
- Description
-
The objective of the study was to characterize the fauna of large and medium-sized mammals in a buffer of 5 km around the Tua lower valley before the dam construction, and to gather quality data to support the design and implementation of mitigation and/or compensation measures. This dataset includes all non-systematic observations of the presence of the target species collected during the large mammal surveys, but outside the sampling points/transects and/or during other vertebrate fauna surveys.

Sampling
- Study Extent
-
The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the lower Tua River valley (Northeast Portugal) up to 35 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães, Alijó, Vila Flor, Murça and Mirandela.
- Sampling Description
-
No standardized sampling was used. All observations made outside the sampled points/transects for large mammals and/or during surveys of other vertebrates were recorded and collected here. The identification and species assessment methods were those used for the large mammals regular surveys: indirect signs of presence (scats, tracks) or observations of live individuals (only at night).
