An integrated ecological investigation of Saronicos Gulf, Aegean sea, was made with the objective of studying the phytoplanktonic populations of the area in connection with the detection and quantitation of species indicators of sewage pollution. The data used comprise the results of thirty six surveys made during January - December 1980. Quantitative and qualitative data of phytoplankton populations collected monthly from nine stations are reported. The stations consisted of three transects of three stations each, from inshore to offshore waters.

<para>Phytoplankton samples were collected with a van Dorhn sampler at 1 and 40 m depth. Samples were preserved with Lugol-acetate solution and analysed quantitatively (in number of cells/liter) and qualitatively in an inverted microscope (Utermohl, 1931). Samples for chlorophyll-a determinations were filtered on ship board through MILLIPORE (Type AA) filters, which were treated immediately as described by Strickland and Parsons (1968). Temperature was measured with inverted thermometers. Oxygen determination was carried out shipboard using the Winkler method as suggested by Strickland and Parsons (1968). Salinity was measured in the laboratory on an inductively coupled salinometer (type C.S.I.R.O.). Samples for nutrient analysis were filtered immediately after collection, kept frozen at -20 oC and analysed within the following 2-3 days. Determinations of phosphate, nitrate, nitrite, silicate, organic nitrogen and organic phosphorus were made after Strickland and Parsons (1968). Ammonia was determined by the method of Liddicoat et al.,(1976).</para>
