EDP Foz-Tua: Terrestrial Birds (point counts) Complementary Studies [2010]

The dataset contains records of terrestrial birds (Aves) collected in the lower valley of the River Tua, and included in the Complementary Studies (2009-2010) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between April and May 2010 during field visits to 16 sampling points with favourable habitats in 20 2x2 km UTM squares on the area of the lower Tua valley directly or indirectly affected by the Foz Tua dam. The occurrence of birds was recorded when individuals were seen or heard around the point in a 10-minute census.

Abstract

The dataset contains records of terrestrial birds (Aves) collected along the lower Tua River valley, and included in the Complementary Studies of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between April and May 2010, during field visits to 16 sampling points with favourable habitats for terrestrial birds within a 5-km buffer around the River Tua lower valley. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 267 positive observation events. In total, 45 species were identified. The most recorded species (>20 individuals) were Ptyonoprogne rupestris (35), Turdus merula (24), Serinus serinus and Fringilla coelebs (22).

Funding

The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A.

Study Area Description

Descriptor

The study was conducted in part of the sub-basins of river Tua, prior to the construction and subsequent flooding of the lower part of this river valley by the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for terrestrial birds found in a 5-km radius buffer around the future reservoir banks, and up to 50 km from the Tua mouth.

Design Description

Description

The objective of the study was to characterize the terrestrial avifauna in a buffer of 5 km around the lower Tua River valley before the dam construction, and to gather quality data to support the design and implementation of mitigation and/or compensation measures.

Study Extent

The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the lower Tua River valley (Northeast Portugal), up to 50 km from the mouth in the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães, Vila Flor, Alijó, Murça and Mirandela.

Sampling Description

Sampling was designed to cover the main habitat types for terrestrial birds in and around the lower River Tua valley affected by the Foz Tua dam. Each sampling point was visited once in spring (April-May of 2010) and a 10-minute census was performed in each point (limited distance method). Birds were counted and recorded up to a fixed distance (50m) and beyond the distance (up to 100m) separately. Species identification and assessment of age and sex (when possible) were made locally, with the help of appropriate field guides.
