Arctic zooplankton size, flux and trait data from a long-term sediment trap time series in Kongsfjorden

This data resource provides a comprehensive individual-level zooplankton dataset derived from a long-term sediment trap time series collected at the Mooring Dirigibile Italia (MDI) in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, between 2016 and 2023. The resource comprises three complementary datasets: (i) taxonomic and morphometric observations, (ii) abundance and biomass flux estimates, and (iii) a categorical functional trait matrix. Overall, the resource contains 11,680 occurrence records representing 11,907 individuals collected from 101 sediment trap samples and assigned to 105 accepted taxa. The dataset includes holoplanktonic and meroplanktonic organisms, together with occasional benthic species captured by the sediment trap. For each occurrence, taxonomic identity, morphometric measurements, developmental stage, sex (when identifiable), and associated functional trait information are provided. Abundance and biomass fluxes were calculated for each sample, taxon, and life stage, enabling quantitative assessments of zooplankton export through the water column. Complementing these observations, a categorical functional trait matrix assigns each taxon to 13 morphological, behavioural, and life-history traits comprising 49 trait modalities. This multilevel biodiversity and functional data resource supports investigations of long-term variability in Arctic zooplankton biodiversity, body size, population structure, functional composition, and carbon export. By integrating taxonomic, morphometric, abundance, biomass, and functional trait information, the dataset provides a valuable foundation for trait-based ecological analyses, biodiversity assessments, and studies of pelagic ecosystem functioning. The harmonised use of Darwin Core and the Traits Thesaurus further ensures semantic interoperability and facilitates integration with other biodiversity data resources.

Abstract

Method Step

Description

Zooplankton samples were collected using an automated sediment trap (Technicap PPS4/3) deployed at 87 m depth at the Mooring Dirigibile Italia (MDI) site in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, from May 2016 to June 2023. The sediment trap operated continuously throughout the year with bottle rotation intervals ranging from 11 days to 3 months. Collection bottles were pre-filled with a buffered 5% formaldehyde solution to preserve biological material.

Method Step

Description

In the laboratory, zooplankton specimens were separated from sinking particles using a 500 μm sieve, manually sorted, and examined under a stereomicroscope equipped with a digital imaging system. Each specimen was identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level, counted, and measured for morphometric traits. Whenever possible, developmental stage and sex were determined based on morphological characteristics and body size. Abundance was calculated as the total number of intact individuals per taxon in each sample, excluding damaged or fragmented specimens. Individual biomass (mg dry mass per individual) was estimated using species-specific dry mass values and conversion factors derived from published literature. Abundance and biomass were subsequently standardised by the sediment trap collecting area (m²) and deployment duration (days), and expressed as abundance flux (individuals m⁻² d⁻¹) and biomass flux (mg dry mass m⁻² d⁻¹), respectively. To complement the taxonomic information, functional trait data were systematically compiled for all taxa using published literature and authoritative sources. The dataset includes 13 functional traits encompassing morphological, behavioural, and life-history characteristics, represented by a total of 49 trait modalities. Trait information was integrated with the taxonomic dataset to support functional diversity assessments and subsequent functional cluster analyses. All records underwent rigorous quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) procedures.

Method Step

Description

Taxonomic names, functional trait information, and metadata were harmonised and standardised using the Darwin Core standard and the Traits Thesaurus to ensure semantic consistency, interoperability, and compliance with FAIR data principles.

Sampling

Study Extent

Zooplankton was collected using an automated Technicap sediment trap positioned 18 metres above the seafloor. The trap, equipped with 12/24 receiving cups (each covering 0.05 m²), rotated at variable intervals ranging from 11 to 92 days, depending on the expected intensity of the sinking material flux, typically with longer intervals in winter and shorter in summer. All samples were successfully retrieved during the sampling periods.

The data regard the inner region of Kongsfjorden (78°54.815N, 12°14.899E), Svalbard.

qualityControl

Description

Taxonomic identification was validated against the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) to ensure scientific accuracy. Data were then standardised following the Darwin Core standard and harmonised using the Traits Thesaurus, enabling semantic consistency and interoperability with other trait-based datasets.

The maximum linear distance of the pereon (thoracic body region) measured along its anteroposterior axis. This trait is applicable to organisms possessing a distinct pereon, primarily crustaceans. The pereon is an anatomical term primarily used to refer to the thoracic region of the body, located between the cephalon (head) and the pleon (abdomen). It is typically composed of several leg-bearing segments (pereonites).
