EDP Baixo Sabor: Construction and Reservoir Filling Phases – Otter [2010-2014]
The dataset contains records of the Otter (Lutra lutra) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of surveys made in and around the area affected by the dam, from November 2010 to December 2014. Sampling was performed in transects distributed along the lower Sabor river valley (and some tributaries), and along the rivers Maçãs and Angueira, up to 42 km upstream. The presence and identity of the target species were assessed through the presence of faeces (spraints) and/or footprints of the target species.

- Abstract

The dataset contains records of the Otter (Lutra lutra) (Mammalia) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), and in rivers Maçãs and Angueira, in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of surveys made between November 2010 and December 2014. Sampling was performed every spring/summer and autumn, in a total of 41 sampling transects along the river Sabor and some tributaries, and along the rivers Maçãs and Angueira. The occurrence of the target species was documented by looking for signs (spraints, footprints) attributable to the species, and also by the occasional observation of individuals. A total of 6199 scats, along with a number of other signs of presence of the species (prey remains, lairs/shelters and footprints/trails) were recorded.

Study Area Description
- Descriptor
-
The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Sabor affected by the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was carried out in suitable habitats for the otter, in 5x5 km squares centered in the lower Sabor river valley and some tributaries, ands along the rivers Maçãs and Angueira, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream.
Design Description
- Description
-
The objective of the study was to detect the presence of the target species and to monitor changes in its distribution patterns in the area of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams during the initial phase of construction and the reservoir filling periods (2010-2014).

Sampling
- Study Extent
-
The data were collected in 49 5x5 km squares in the lower Sabor river valley, its tributaries and the rivers Maçãs and Angueira, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro and Macedo de Cavaleiros.
- Sampling Description
-
Sampling was designed to cover the whole valley of the lower Sabor river, its tributaries, and the rivers Maçãs and Angueira. A total of 41 transects was established in the study area (1-3 per 5x5 km square). The transects had a minimum lenght of 200 m and, within this distance, the survey was stopped after the detection of the first confirmed sign of presence of the species (e.g., spraints, footprints). If there were no evidences of presence in the first 200 m, the transect was extended to a maximum of 600 m, after which, if the absence of signs persisted, the species was considered absent in the transect. Each transect was performed on foot, at dawn or sunset, by one or two observers, and the riverbed and its margins were carefully searched for signs of otter's presence (scats, footprints). All scats found were identified in the field and then taken to the laboratory for dietary analysis. The survey was based on indirect signs of otter presence, because individuals of the species are difficult to observe directly, and because the presence signs (spraints and footprints) can be unequivocally identified by experienced technicians.
