Elemental composition of non-indigenous marine species of potential commercial interest
This dataset includes the elemental composition of 76 specimens. Elemental composition analysis was carried out on seven alien marine species (i.e. Anadara kagoshimensis, A. transversa, Siganus luridus, S. rivulatus, Sparisoma cretense, Pterois miles, Callincetes sapidus) within the Mediterranean Sea and the concentration of 25 elements was determined and expressed in the dataset as mg/kg (ppm) of dry weight. The dataset includes temporal and geographic information (e.g. date, water body, country, coordinates) of the different sampling events in which the specimens were collected and morphometric indices of the analysed individuals (e.g. wet and dry weights, lenght, etc.). Specimens were collected during different sampling campaigns and were stored for subsequent analysis at the laboratories of the CNR IRBIM Ancona and of the University of Salento. Elemental composition analyses were carried out at the University of Salento within the USEit project.

- Description

The total concentration of 25 elements (i.e. Al, As, B, Ba, Be, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, P, Pb, Se, Sr, Te, Tl, Zn) was determined by wet digestion. Tissue samples (whole soft body for bivalves and muscle tissue for the rest of the specimens) were dried, weighed, and mixed with 4 ml of water and 6 ml nitric acid at 180°C for 10 minutes using a microwave digestion system (Milestone START D). Samples were subsequently cooled, diluted with ultrapure water to a final volume of 25 ml, filtered through Whatman No. 42 filters and finally used for elemental analysis using an inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES; Thermo Scientific iCap 6000 Series). Results of the analysis are expressed in mg/kg of dry weight.

Sampling
- Study Extent
-
Specimens used for elemental composition analysis were collected at four marine sites of the Adriatic and Ionian Sea (Ravenna and Ugento, Italy), Aegean Sea (Fodele, Greece) and Levantine Sea (Zygi, Cyprus) in four different sampling occasions in 2022.
- Sampling Description
-
Specimens represent seven invasive alien species in the Mediterranean and include two bivalve mollusks (Anadara kagoshimensis and A. transversa) collected during the SoleMon survey, four fish species (Siganus luridus, S. rivulatus, Sparisoma cretense and Pterois miles) collected by small-fishers in Greece and in Cyprus, and crustacean decapods (Callinectes sapidus) captured in the Ugento ponds (Lecce, Italy) using crab traps. After specimen collection, bivalves were preserved frozen, while fish were sampled from the dorsal muscle after carefully removing the skin and sterilizing the tools for each individual. For C. sapidus, muscle samples were dissected from the chelipeds. Tissue samples from fish and C. sapidus were then preserved in the freezer.

One of the toxic heavy metal which has caused deaths and permanent illnesses in a series of major pollution incidents around the world. Cadmium has no useful biological purpose. However, it has wide industrial applications. It has been used for decades in metal plating to prevent corrosion, in rechargeable batteries and as a pigment in certain plastics and paints. Special care is taken in the industrial smelting of ores and subsequent handling of cadmium, because occupational exposure is known to have caused heart, chest and kidney disorders. Environmental health problems have come from exposure to various sources of pollution.

Aluminium (or aluminum) is a chemical element in the boron group with symbol Al and atomic number 13. It is a silvery white, soft, ductile metal. Aluminium is the third most abundant element (after oxygen and silicon), and the most abundant metal, in the Earth's crust (occurs widely in nature in clays). It makes up about 8% by weight of the Earth's solid surface. Aluminium metal is so chemically reactive that native specimens are rare and limited to extreme reducing environments. Instead, it is found combined in over 270 different minerals. Aluminium became implicated as an environmental health hazard in the 1980s on two counts. Biomedical scientists looking for possible causes of Alzheimer's disease, the premature senility indicated by loss of memory and confusion, found a circumstantial link with aluminium. The theory is a controversial one.

Magnesium is a chemical element with the symbol Mg and atomic number 12. Its common oxidation number is +2. It is an alkaline earth metal. Magnesium is the fourth-most-common element in the Earth as a whole (behind iron, oxygen and silicon), making up 13% of the planet's mass and a large fraction of the planet's mantle. Due to magnesium ion's high solubility in water, it is the third-most-abundant element dissolved in seawater. Magnesium is produced in stars larger than 3 solar masses by fusing helium and neon in the alpha process at temperatures above 600 megakelvins. It is important for the activity of many enzymes, especially those involved in oxidative phosphorylation.
