Abstract

The dataset contains records of large mammals (Mammalia) collected in transects along the lower Tua River, and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between June 2011 and August 2017, with 47 (2011), 24 (2012-2014) and 28 (>2014) line transects in areas with favorable habitats for large mammals within a 5-km buffer around the River Tua lower valley. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 1460 positive records. In total, 177 were identified only to class, 7 to order, 27 to family and 50 to genus, while 1229 were identified to the species rank. The most abundant species (> 100 records) were Vulpes vulpes (565), Sus scrofa (214) and Genetta genneta (164).

The study was conducted in the lower valley of river Tua, during the construction of the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam and the subsequent flooding of its reservoir. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for large mammals in a 5 km radius buffer around the future reservoir banks and up to 35 km from the Tua mouth.

The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the distribution patterns and abundances of species of large mammals in the area of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, prior to (2011) and during (2011-2016) the dam construction, and in the subsequent flooding of the river valley (2016-2017).

The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the Tua lower valley (Northeast Portugal), up to 35 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Carrazeda de Ansiães, Alijó, Murça, Vila Flor and Mirandela.

Sampling Description

Sampling was designed to cover the main habitat types for large mammals in and around the lower Tua valley affected by the Foz-Tua dam (including the reservoir area). Up to 47 transects were established in 24 2x2 km squares in the flooded area and in control areas upstream. Each transect, with a length of of about 500 m, was walked on foot, during daytime, by two observers, one each side of the transect, which recorded all individuals and/or signs of presence of the target species (e.g. scats, footprints, tracks, trails, rooting, hog wallows, rubs). All recorded contacts/signs have been identified or collected for later identification.
