EDP Baixo Sabor: Construction and Reservoir Filling Phases - Otter: camera-trapping - [2010-2013]

The dataset contains records of the Otter (Lutra lutra) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of surveys made in and around the area affected by the dams, from September 2010 to November 2013. Sampling was performed with camera-traps distributed along the lower Sabor river valley (and some tributaries) and along the rivers Maçãs and Angueira, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream. The presence and identity of the target species were assessed with the visualization of photos taken through camera-trapping.

Abstract

The dataset contains records of the Otter (Lutra lutra) collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of camera-trapping made between September 2010 and November 2013. Sampling was performed every season with a total the 15 (2010) or 20 (2011-13) cameras set in 5x5 km squares (one or two per square) along the river Sabor and some tributaries, and along the rivers Maçãs and Angueira. The occurrence of the target species was documented by positive identification of the species in the photos taken. A total of 11 positive events (i.e., identifiable photos of the target species) was obtained.

Funding

The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A.

Study Area Description

Descriptor

The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Sabor affected by the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in suitable riverine habitats for the species, in 5x5 km squares centered in the lower Sabor river valley and some tributaries, and along the rivers Maçãs and Angueira, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream.

Design Description

Description

The objective of the study was to detect the presence of the target species and to monitor changes in their distribution patterns in the area of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams during the construction and the reservoir filling periods (2011-2014). The program was interrupted in 2104, when the deforestation work in the future area of the reservoir and its subsequent filling prevented safe access to the river margins.

Sampling

Study Extent

The data were collected in 49 5x5 km squares in the lower Sabor river valley, some of its tributaries, and along the rivers Maçãs and Angueira, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro and Macedo de Cavaleiros.

Sampling Description

Sampling was designed to cover the whole valley of the lower Sabor river, some of its tributaries, and the rivers Maçãs and Angueira. A maximum of 15 (in 2010) or 20 (in 2011-13) automatic cameras was deployed in the study area (one or two per 5x5 km square). In 2010 (an experimental period), the cameras were deployed for a maximum period of 15 days. Starting in 2011, a maximum exposure period of three months was adopted, with the cameras being inspected at the end of each month. From 2012 onward, an increasing number of cameras were lost, due to theft, damage or destruction, forcing their substitution. The dataset presents the total number of photos taken for the target species for each exposure period, by the combined set of cameras in each square.
