Monitoring of physical, chemical and biological parameters at Helgoland Roads and Sylt Roads (North Sea)
This long-term monitoring initiative includes two complementary time series stations: Helgoland Roads (HR) and Sylt Roads (SR), both located in the North Sea. HR and SR have provided high-frequency data on physical, chemical and biological variables for more than six decades, making them invaluable for studying long-term environmental change in marine systems. Parameters include salinity, temperature, nutrient concentrations, Secchi depth, and plankton community composition and abundance (phytoplankton and zooplankton).<div>HR time series began in 1962 (abiotic and phytoplankton), and mesozooplankton were included from 1974. SR environmental parameters started in 1973, with semi-quantitative micro plankton added in 1987. These ecological datasets are crucial for assessing ecosystem changes and serve as reference material for modelling and experimental work.</div>
