Micro-Computed Tomography (Micro-CT) Morphological Data of Chondrilla nucula and Hexaplex trunculus Subjected to Experimental
Climate Change Conditions
This dataset includes 3D morphological data for two invertebrate species, Chondrilla nucula and Hexaplex trunculus. These data are part of the MACCIMO project ( https://maccimo.hcmr.gr/), which aims to assess the effects of climate change on sessile marine invertebrates. Such organisms are particularly susceptible to climate-related stressors due to their limited motility and inability to escape adverse environmental conditions. Within this framework, 3D analyses were performed using micro-CT scans to evaluate potential morphological changes associated with climate change impacts.

Multi-level Approaches to assess Climate Change Impact to Marine Organisms (MACCIMO)
- Abstract
-
MACCIMO aims to assess the effect of climate change on sessile marine invertebrates, the organisms mostly affected by environmental pressures due to their reduced motility. The proposed approach involves experimental exposure of the targeted organisms to combined temperature and low pH gradients, in order to simulate the synergistic impact of naturally occurring stressors.
The overall objectives of the proposed research project are:
(a) To implement an integrative approach for the estimation of climate change impact on different marine invertebrate taxa with partial or low motility.
(b) To examine the different mechanisms – molecular and physiological– activated to cope with the imposed stress factors, as well as to investigate the alterations in structural morphology and associated microsymbiotic communities.
(c) To study intra-species variation in response to thermal and oxidative challenges, in order to unravel the potential diversity of adaptations in geographically distinct populations.

The research tasks in the framework of MACCIMO are organized into 6 distinct work packages (WPs). WP1 oversees the scientific management and coordination of the project. WP2 manages the experimental setup and provides samples to WPs 3-6, each one assigned one analytical approach for the assessment of response of target organisms to experimental treatment.
