Study Area Description

Descriptor

The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Sabor affected by the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in suitable rabbit habitats in all known territories of the Bonelli's Eagle in the of lower Sabor river valley and its tributaries, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream.

Design Description

Description

The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the abundances of a key prey species (Rabbit) for the Bonelli's Eagle and other birds of prey, in the area of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dam, from the initial and intermediate phases of the construction to the reservoir filling period (2010-2014).

Study Extent

The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the the lower river Sabor and its main tributaries, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro and Macedo de Cavaleiros.

Sampling Description

The dataset includes systematic observations collected in 8 transects located in the 4 territories of the Bonelli's Eagle located in the lower Sabor river valley (2 transects in each territory). Two 500-meter transects were surveyed by an observer moving slowly and recording all signs of presence (latrines, scattered droppings and burrows) on both sides of the transect. The figures presented, which measures the relative abundance of the target species, refer only to the number of latrines detected per transect.
