      <para>Phytoplankton composition and size distribution in the Lago Maggiore (Italy) was analysed in detail measuring the main morphological parameters of the algal cells. This data set allowed to evaluate the morphological plasticity of many species across the seasonal succession.</para>

        <description>Phytoplankton determinations were carried out following Lund et al. (1958). Measurements of algal cells and colonies were carried out by image analysis (Image Pro Plus): calculation of surface area, the volume and measurement of GALD were done each time for all the species, collecting about 28,000 data, using the equations provided by Sun and Liu (2003) and Hillebrand et al. (1999).</description>

        <samplingDescription>Samples were collected during the 2002. Samples were gathered fortnightly from March until October, monthly in January, November and December, at the station of Ghiffa, corresponding to the deepest point of the lake.</samplingDescription>
