New records of annelid species along the Salento Peninsula, 2005-2023
This dataset contains distributional records of marine annelid species collected along the coasts of the Salento Peninsula between 2005 and 2023. The material analysed was gathered from 65 sampling stations located at depths ranging from 0 to 969 m. These stations encompassed a variety of habitat types, including mesophotic biogenic hard substrates, coralligenous outcrops, intertidal coralline algae, soft bottoms, and soft sediments associated with seagrass meadows. In total, 344 taxa belonging to 48 families were identified in the examined material. The dataset also includes a record dated 1984, which refers to the re-examination of historical samples.

MAPWORMS
- Abstract
-
Scientists have long envisioned more human-like robots able to sense and respond to their environments. Although the term soft robotics emerged fewer than two decades ago, these systems are already finding applications in diverse fields including medicine, space and locomotion. Inspired by marine Annelida (segmented worms) that adapt to their environment with shape changes, the EU-funded MAPWORMS project will develop a new concept for adaptable, responsive and shape-morphing soft robotics. A study of adaptation and plasticity in the body plan of marine Annelida will inform a model for the development of smart soft materials with shape-morphing and self-healing capabilities, based on DNA components. These will form the building blocks of bio-inspired shape-morphing robots.

The dataset underwent comprehensive quality control using the LifeWatch and EMODnet Biology data quality control tool. Date fields were manually cross-validated by data stewards. Taxonomic entries were validated using the WoRMS Taxon Match tool, and geographic coordinates were checked against the Marine Regions Gazetteer.
