- Abstract
-
The dataset contains records of the main avian prey species of Bonelli’s Eagle (Aquila fasciata) and other large birds of prey: Red-legged Partridge (Alectoris rufa), Rock Pigeon (Colimba livia) and Wood Pigeon (Columba palumbus) (Aves), collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of point counts performed each season (winter, spring, summer and autumn) in the known territories of the Bonelli's Eagle in the lower Sabor river valley ("Estevais", "Meirinhos", "Soutelo" and "Brunhoso"), from February 2010 to September 2014. Data consists of observations of individuals per sampling point, and includes 197 observations for the Red-legged Partridge, 154 for the Rock Pigeon and 665 for the Wood Pigeon.

Study Area Description
- Descriptor
-
The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Sabor affected by the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for the target species in all known territories of the Bonelli's Eagle in the lower Sabor river valley and its tributaries, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream.
Design Description
- Description
-
The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the abundances of selected prey species (Red-legged Partridge and Wood Pigeon) for the Bonelli's Eagle and other birds of prey, in the area of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams, from the initial and intermediate phases of the construction to the reservoir filling period (2010-2014).

Sampling
- Study Extent
-
The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the lower river Sabor and its main tributaries, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro and Macedo de Cavaleiros.
- Sampling Description
-
The dataset includes systematic observations collected in 8 point counts located in the 4 territories of the Bonelli's Eagle located in the lower Sabor river valley (2 points in each territory). A 10-minute census per point was performed by a single observer, who recorded all target species, by sight or sound, without limit of distance. All identifications were made "in loco" by an experienced observer.
