LTER Baixo Sabor: Long term monitoring of freshwater fish - Sabor watershed [2012 - 2020]
The dataset contains records of Fishes (Pisces) collected in the River Sabor (NE Portugal) in 2012-2020, in the scope of a study aiming to understand the temporal dynamics of fish communities in relation to natural and anthropogenics drivers in a Mediterranean watershed. The study is part of research carried out at the Long Term Ecological Research Site (LTER) of Baixo Sabor (lter_eu_pt_002; https://deims.org/45722713-80e3-4387-a47b-82c97a6ef62b). The dataset includes data on fish communities obtained through electro-fishing (with restitution) at 74 sampling sites in 2012, and subsequently at 37 of these sites from 2013-2020. Until 2020, the data include a total of 27,514 records of 14 freshwater fish species. Part of these data has already been analised and published (see Ferreira et al., 2016; Mota-Ferreira et al., 2021). The dataset will be regularly updated with additional data from future sampling years.

- Abstract
-
The dataset contains records of Fishes (Pisces) collected in the River Sabor (NE Portugal) in 2012-2020, in the scope of a study aiming to understand the temporal dynamics of fish communities in relation to natural and anthropogenics drivers in a Mediterranean watershed. The study is part of research carried out at the Long Term Ecological Research Site (LTER) of Baixo Sabor (lter_eu_pt_002; https://deims.org/45722713-80e3-4387-a47b-82c97a6ef62b). The occurrence and abundance of the target taxa were documented through 27,514 records of individuals. The most abundant species (>2,000 records) were Luciobarbus bocagei (6,166 individuals), Pseudochondrostoma duriense (4,894), Squalius caroliterii (4,693), Squalius alburnoides (3,620), Lepomis gibbosus (2,910), and Gobio lozanoi (2,360). The taxonomy of fish recorded as Achondrostoma arcasii is currently under evaluation, and so the identity of the species will be updated in the near future. Part of these data has already been analised and published (Ferreira et al., 2016; Mota-Ferreira et al., 2021). The dataset will be regularly updated with additional data from future sampling years.
- Funding
-
The work was funded by the EDP Biodiversity Chair, the project “Sabor fragmentation experiment: understanding long-term ecological consequences of infrastructure development and compensatory mitigation” (Sabor-LTER, LTER/BIA-BEC/0004/2009) and by a PhD grant provided by FCT (SFRH/BD/95202/2013).
Study Area Description
- Descriptor
-
The study was conducted in NE Portugal, in the river Sabor catchment, which covers a wide range of environmental conditions in terms of elevation (100-1500 meters above sea level), total annual precipitation (443 - 1163 mm), and mean annual temperature (6.9 – 15.6o 5 C). Climate is Mediterranean, with precipitation largely concentrated in October-March, while it is virtually absent in the hot summer months (June-August). Flow regime is highly seasonal, with most headwaters streams drying out or being reduced to a series of disconnected pools in summer, though the main watercourse and some of the tributaries are permanent. Two hydroelectric dams (Feiticeiro: 181 ha; Baixo Sabor: 2 820 ha) located near the mouth of the River Sabor started to be built in 2009, with the main reservoir filling in autumn/winter of 2014/2015.
Design Description
- Description
-
Data on the freshwater fish communities of the Sabor River watershed (NE Portugal) were collected annually following standardised electrofishing procedures, from 2012 to 2020. All fish collected were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level, counted measured for total length, and returned alive to the river (except individuals of exotic species). A dataset containing all information was prepared using the Darwin Core format, and uploaded into GBIF for wider use by the scientific community.

Sampling
- Study Extent
-
Data were collected in 50-m sampling reaches distributed across the entire watershed of the Sabor River and its main tributaries (e.g., Maçãs, Angueira), and they are located in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro, Macedo de Cavaleiros, Bragança and Vimioso.
- Sampling Description
-
The data was collected between 2012 and 2020, using standard electrofishing protocols (INAG, 2008) in a stream stretch of 50 meters for 15-25 minutes, with longer surveys in wider and deeper streams to properly cover the stretch. Within each segment, fish were sampled using a single anode electrofishing gear (350-750V, 3-5A, DC). Electrofishing was always conducted by the same operator, while a second operator was tasked with the netting of the displaced fish. All captured individuals were identified on site and released after the sampling session. In accordance with the Portuguese legislation, all individuals belonging to exotic species were euthanized, instead of being returned to the wild. All sampling were conducted under the appropriate permits of Portuguese conservation authority, the Instituto da Conservação da Natures e Florestas (ICNF). Details of the methods are available in Ferreira et al. (2016) and Mota-Ferreira et al. (2021).
