Biofouling of ship hulls in the Port of Algiers in 2021

This dataset originated from a specific bio-surveillance field study conducted in the fishing port of Algiers during spring 2021 (Kacimi, 2021). Data was collected by scraping biological material from hard substrates like floating structures and port structures at specific stations. The dataset contains records of identified fouling species, including their taxonomic classification (across Porifera, Bryozoa, Ascidiacea), status (indigenous, non-indigenous, or cryptogenic), and estimated abundance (visual assessment or frequency). Taxonomic nomenclature was verified using the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS). This dataset serves as a baseline for future assessments of NIS in Algerian ports, though acknowledging limitations in taxonomic coverage and sampling extent.

Method Step

Description

Data Processing Workflow

1. Dataset preparation – Formatting into tidy data (variables as columns, one observation per row, values in cells).

2. Field name standardization – Updating column names to match Darwin Core (DwC) standards.

3. Table separation – Splitting into three tables: Event (sampling events), Occurrence (species records), and eMoF (Extended Measurement or Facts).

4. Vocabulary alignment – Assigning standardized terms using NERC NVS Vocabulary.

5.Quality control – Cross-validation with LifeWatch EMODnet Biology QC Tool.

6. Publication – Final upload to the Integrated Publishing Toolkit (IPT).
