Sediment and Soil data from European coastal wetlands under different restoration contexts
This dataset compiles core biogeochemical measurements from wetland sampling events carried out within the RESTORE4Cs project. Each record is identified by an eventID and locationID, and is linked to its spatial, temporal and vertical context through higher geography (the casepilots of the project), event date, strata, decimal longitude, decimal latitude, and water depth. Sample properties include dry weight, water content, ash free dry weight, and bulk elemental metrics (total organic carbon, total nitrogen, total carbon, total phosphorous), allowing the calculation of C:N:P ratios and organic matter fractions. This dataset is currently under embargo period and it will be available after the 01/01/2027.

Method Step
- Description
-
In the laboratory, samples were thawed and weighed (wet weight), then dried at 105 °C to constant mass and weighed again (dry weight) to calculate soil moisture. After homogenisation with a mortar or ball mill, subsamples were taken for elemental analysis of carbon and nitrogen. Additional subsamples were combusted at 450 °C for 4 hours to determine mass loss (AshFreeDryMass), and further subsamples were used for phosphate content analysis at the University of Bucharest. A detailed methodological description is available in RESTORE4Cs Deliverable D4.2: https://www.restore4cs.eu/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/RESTORE4Cs-D4.2.pdf

Sampling
- Study Extent
-
Six coastal wetlands along European coasts were sampled. At each site, six subsites representing different ecological status categories (P: preserved, R: restored, A: altered) were sampled once per season, for a total of four sampling campaigns. During each campaign, three sediment cores (4 cm diameter) were collected per subsite. The upper 10 cm of each core were transferred to plastic bags, frozen at −20 °C, and shipped to WasserCluster Lunz for analysis. A more detailed description of the sampling design is provided in RESTORE4Cs Deliverable D4.2: https://www.restore4cs.eu/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/RESTORE4Cs-D4.2.pdf
- Sampling Description
-
Six different coastal wetlands were selected as case pilots: Camargue, Curonian Lagoon, Danube Delta, South-West Dutch Delta, Ria de Aveiro and Valencian wetland Marjal dels Moros. In each case pilot wetland, six subsites were sampled. Sampling was repeated in all four seasons

Code that identifies the location (the wetland "unit") where the measurement was taken. Coded as a combination of the casepilot (higherGeography) abreviation and one of "A1", "A2", "P1", "P2", "R1" or "R2". Letters A, P, R followed by number correspond to the ecological status classification of the locations (A=Altered, P=Preserved, R= Restored).

Total phosphorous
- Definition
-
The total phosphorus test measures all the forms of phosphorus in the sample (orthophosphate, condensed phosphate, and organic phosphate). This is accomplished by first "digesting" (heating and acidifying) the sample to convert all the other forms to orthophosphate. Then the orthophosphate is measured by the ascorbic acid method. Because the sample is not filtered, the procedure measures both dissolved and suspended orthophosphate.
