EDP Baixo Sabor: Construction and Reservoir Filling Phases – Natural Wolf Prey (Roe Deer) [2010-2014]
The dataset contains records of the Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus), a major wild prey of the Iberian Wolf, collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of surveys made in and around the area affected by the dam, from June 2010 to April 2014. Sampling was performed in transects distributed along the lower Sabor river valley (and some tributaries), and in rivers Maçãs and Angueira, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream. The presence of the target species was assessed through faecal pellet surveys, due to difficulties in directly observing the species.

- Abstract
-
The dataset contains records of the Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus) (Mammalia), a major wild prey for the Iberian Wolf, collected in the lower valley of River Sabor (NE Portugal), and in rivers Maçãs and Angueira, in the scope of the long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (PME) of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams (AHBS), promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. This dataset includes results of transects surveyed between June 2010 and April 2014. Sampling was performed every season in a total of 38 transects, one in each of the 38 5x5 km squares established in the study area. The occurrence of the target species was documented through faecal pellet surveys, due to difficulties in directly observing the species. Since the number of scats found was very low, only the presence or absence of the species per transect was recorded. A total of 183 evidences of presence (scats) were obtained (94 confirmed and 89 probable).

Study Area Description
- Descriptor
-
The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Sabor affected by the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was made in suitable habitats for the Roe Deer, in the lower Sabor river valley and some of its tributaries, and in rivers Maçãs and Angueira, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream.
Design Description
- Description
-
The objective of the study was to detect the presence of the target species and to monitor changes in their distribution patterns in the area of the Baixo Sabor Hydroelectric Dams during the construction and the reservoir filling periods (2010-2014).

Sampling
- Study Extent
-
The data were collected in transects set in 38 5x5 km squares established in the lower Sabor river valley, its tributaries and in the rivers Maçãs and Angueira, from the river mouth up to 42 km upstream, in the municipalities of Torre de Moncorvo, Alfândega da Fé, Mogadouro and Macedo de Cavaleiros.
- Sampling Description
-
Sampling was designed to cover the whole valley of the lower Sabor river, its tributaries and the rivers Maçãs and Angueira, with particular emphasis on places where the presence of Iberian Wolf had been confirmed previously and in places where the species was expected to be present. A total of 38 transects was established in the study area (one per 5x5 km square). Each transect had a length of 800 m, and it was surveyed for roe deer once per season during the day. Surveys involve the detection of faecal pellets and/or footprints of the target species, given the difficulties of directly observing individuals of this species. All signs (confirmed or probable) of roe deer presence were identified "in loco" by experienced technicians.
