Monitoring of benthic fauna offshore Palavas-Les-Flots (France)

This bi/triennial monitoring program, led by CSIC-CEAB in collaboration with Créocéan since 2003, investigates soft-bottom benthic macrofauna communities offshore of Palavas-Les-Flots (Occitanie region, French Mediterranean coast). The monitoring aims to assess the ecological impact of treated urban wastewater discharge from the Montpellier metropolitan area into the coastal marine environment. Sampling is conducted at 10 offshore stations using Van Veen grabs, with three replicate samples of 0.1 m² per station. Samples are sieved through a 1 mm mesh to retain all invertebrate and chordate taxa gt;1 mm.

Field surveys are conducted every 2 to 3 years, targeting benthic macrofauna at a depth of approximately 30 meters.
