Abstract

The dataset contains records of the Dipper (Cinclus cinclus, Aves) and other riparian bird species collected in transects along the Tinhela river valley (a tributary of Tua river) and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between June 2011 and June 2017 during field visits to six sampling transects with favorable habitats for the Dipper. The occurrence of the target and associated taxa (riparian birds) was documented through 31 observations of Cinclus cinclus (7), Motacilla cinerea (18), Cettia cetti (3), Luscinia megarhynchos (2) and Alcedo atthis (1).

Funding

The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A.

Study Area Description

Descriptor

The study was conducted in the river Tinhela, in the sub-basin of river Tua affected by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam (Tinhela mouth), and in areas upstream. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for the Dipper in the riverbed of Tinhela river, up to 10 km from the mouth.

Design Description

Description

The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the distribution patterns and abundances of the Dipper in the Tinhela river, an important area for this species in the Tua sub-basin, to assess the potential effects of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dan, during the dam construction (2011-2015), and during/after the flooding (2017).

Sampling

Study Extent

The data were collected in the riverbeds of the Tinhela river (river Tua sub-basin) (Northeast Portugal), up to 10 km from the mouth, in the municipality of Murça.

Sampling Description

Sampling was designed to cover the main habitats for the Dipper and other riparian birds along the Tinhela valley affected by the Foz-Tua dam (the mouth) and upstream. A total of six line transects was established along the river Tinhela. All transects were sampled once in winter and 1-2 times in the reproductive period (spring), in the early morning or late afternoon. Each transect was walked on foot at a constant speed of 1-2 km/h and lasted no less than 30 minutes. Species identification and assessment of age and sex (when possible) were made “in loco”, with the help of appropriate field guides.
