Aalto: Sample training set for Ailanthus altissima visual aid reconnaissance

Abstract

The Aalto shapefile contain a sample training set for the Alvar cloud application, i.e. a service for Ailanthus altissima visual aid reconnaissance. The minimum working example to run the service is to use Alvar (service) and this dataset (Aalto) in pair. The dataset attributes are: label, primary key, string; class: 0 = unclassified, 1 = A. altissima, 2 = other trees, 3 = olive orchards and vineyards, 4 = permanent grassland and crops; type: T = training set, C = control set; notes = a comment string, not used by Alvar software.

Abstract

Biological invasions represent today one of the greatest threats to global biodiversity, with negative impacts on human health and the economy of our country. The USEit project addresses this problem by involving a number of marine and terrestrial institutes of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR). Our main goal is to empower the scientific research on invasive species and to transform this challenge into new opportunities and new growth strategies.

Description

Site identification by historical mapping and local experts advice (Università di Palermo, Parco della Ficuzza, Riserva Monte Pellegrino). On-site species identification by visual inspection. Leaf and soil sampling was carried out for stable isotope analysis according to literature and at least three statistically significant samples per kind, species and sampling site were collected. Study Extent

Random field sampling in Ailanthus altissima infested areas: GPS localisation and in-situ leaves and soil collection (for stable isotopes analysis). Double or triple readings were used for GPS localization to improve accuracy of coordinates collection. Scissors and a lopper were used for leaves collection. Leaves were then stored in plastic bags and refrigeration was applied immediately after picking. Soil cores were collected with Haglöf auger and refrigeration was applied immediately after collection. Sampling Description

The sampling area included western Umbria (central Italy) and Sicily (southern Italy).
