mregions2 R package
mregions2 provides access to the data from http://www.marineregions.org in R. It uses both the Marine Regions Gazetteer Web Services and the Marine Regions OGC Web Services in R.
mregions2 superseedes the previous mregions R package.

Marine Regions Gazetteer
- Description

Dealing with different names of geographic features or entities, VLIZ developed a standard, relational list of geographic names, coupled with information and maps of the geographic location of these features.

The purpose of the gazetteer is to improve access and clarity of the different geographic, mainly marine names such as seas, sandbanks, ridges, bays or even standard sampling stations used in marine research.

The Flanders Marine Institute runs an instance of GeoServer. GeoServer publishes data from any major spatial data source using open standards. GeoServer implements several Open Geospatial Consortium protocols including Web Map Service (WMS), Web Feature Service (WFS), Web Coverage Service (WCS) and Web Map Tile Service (WMTS). Additional extensions are available for Catalogue Service (CSW) and Web Processing Service (WPS).

mregions2 is being developed and maintained by the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ). The maintenance and further development of mregions2 relies on financial contributions, the time contributed by its editorial board, and support of its host institution: VLIZ. Marine Regions is currently funded through the LifeWatch Belgium project.
