Title

Steuer Ad., 1935. The fishery grounds near Alexandria. I Preliminary report. Notes and Memoirs No 8, Fisheries Research Directorate, Egypt

Abstract

This digitized historical paper contains information about the floristical and faunistical survey of the coasts near Alexandria (Egypt) including lake Edku, lake Mareotis and Suez canal that was made by Adolf Steuer in summer and autumn of 1933. It contains specific information and description of the sampling protocol that was followed, for the collection of plankton and benthos. It is also contains detailed description of the habitats and the bionomic division at Alexandria and contains three charts that show the location of benthic and planktonic stations. The digitization of this report was made by LifewatchGreece team

Geographic Coverage

Geographic Description

About 150 benthic and 19 planktonic stations were sampled during the scientific expedition in the coasts of Alexandria, Egypt. Most of the stations were located under the isobath of 200 meters. Some stations were also located in the lakes Edku and Mareotis and in the Suez Canal.

Description

The scientific expedition that was made by Ad. Steuer in the coasts of Alexandria, Egypt at 1933 resulted in the publication of 38 scientific volumes ( https://www.lifewatchgreece.eu/?q=content/egypt-expeditionpdfs) that contain occurence data for many taxonomic groups. Until now, LifewatchGreece team digitized the historical volumes that concerned only benthic macrofauna. Specifically, occurence data of Polychaeta, Mollusca, Decapoda, Amphipoda, Cumacea, Tanaidacea and Isopoda,Cirripedia, Hydroidea, Echinoderma, Sipunculoidea, Pantopoda and Ascidiacea were digitized and are available in ipt.medobis.eu.

Sampling

Study Extent

This digitized historical report contains information about the floristical and faunistical expedition that was made by the Fisheries Research Directorate in the fishery grounds near Alexandria at 1933.

Sampling Description

In general, all excursions were one-day trip. The motor-launch of the Marine Laboratory "El Hoot" about 15 meters long was used for dredging. The isobath of 200 meters was surpassed only at a few points. A rowing boat in shallow water and during favorable conditions was also used. For excursions along the coast, near Rosetta, Lake Mariout and Lake Edku the motor car of the Laboratory was used.

For plankton samples only medium sized nets with celluloid buckets with gauze bottom were available. 19 stations were sampled for plankton once or several times.

For bottom samples almost exclusively a dredge with 20x70 cm opening was used. A single catch was made in a depth of 20 m with a large otter trawl in the eastern part of the Bay of Abukir. Almost 150 stations were bottom sampled.
