Citizen science records of the invasive brown marmorated stink bug Halyomorpha halys in Sardinia
The dataset includes 247 occurrence records of the invasive brown marmorated stink bug Halyomorpha halys in Sardinia recorded between 2016 and 2023. Records have been compiled using citizen science observations and social media searches. Citizen science records were gathered through the Facebook group "Monitoraggio cimice asiatica in Sardegna" or from other photographic reports or specimens' collections reported to the involved scientists from CNR-IRET Sassari, Agris Sardegna - Servizio Ricerca nell'Arboricoltura and UNISS-Department of Agriculture. All observations, specimens and photographic records have been validated through taxonomic identification of entomologists belonging to the research group involved. This datasets is one of the research products of the Italian projects: “Accordo di collaborazione tecnico-scientifica per lo studio della cimice asiatica Halyomorpha halys nell’ambito di un intervento finalizzato al potenziamento del Servizio fitosanitario regionale” and “Programma Nazionale di lotta biologica per il controllo in Italia di Halyomorpha halys mediante l’impiego del suo antagonista naturale, l’Imenottero Scelionide Trissolcus japonicus” funded by Regione Autonoma della Sardegna and “USEit - Utilizzo di sinergie operative per lo studio e la gestione integrata di specie aliene invasive in Italia” funded by CNR - National Research Council of Italy .

Records of Halyomorpha halys have been compiled using citizen science observations and reports carried out between 2016 (year of first record of the species in Sardinia; see citation at the end of this description) and 2024. After its first record, occurred in 2016, the Facebook group "Monitoraggio cimice asiatica in Sardegna" was opened in 2018 to gather photo of specimens of H. halys from citizen scientists. Some of the records included in the dataset do not appear in the Facebook group as they have been collected separately thanks to citizens who communicated directly with the involved scientists. In addition, records in the datasets belonging to the years 2016-2018, were gathered from the research group involved in the project through online searches on social media. All observations, specimens and photographic records have been validated through taxonomic identification of entomologists belonging to the research groups involved.
