    <abstract>
      <para>This dataset comprises samples from 36 sites distributed across six pilot wetlands and three conservation statuses (altered, preserved, restored), i.e. two sites per wetland–status combination. At each site, zooplankton were sampled during two seasonal campaigns covering winter 2023 and summer 2024 (eventIDs, e.g. S2, S4). For each event and site, organisms were identified to the lowest possible taxonomic level. Abundance is recorded as counts of individuals per taxon. Data will be available 31/12/2026.</para>

          <description>Six different coastal wetlands were selected as case pilots: Camargue, Curonian Lagoon, Danube Delta, South-West Dutch Delta, Ria de Aveiro and Valencian wetland Marjal dels Moros. In each case pilot site, subsites corresponding to three different ecological status were selected by duplicate; namely, two well preserved subsites, two altered subsites and two restored subsites. Each subsite was sampled once per season from October 2023 to August 2024.</description>

        <samplingDescription>This methodology consists of concentrating zooplankton from a known volume of water and preserving the collected organisms for later analysis. At shallow sites (depth of less than 0.7 m): 50L (minimum) to 100 L of water is filtered, depending on the density of the zooplankton, through a mesh of 65 µm. Then water is collected using bottles, bucket, or water samplers (Von Dorn bottles/Neskin bottle) at 8 randomly chosen locations to ensure a spatially integrated sample. If necessary, scoop surface water into the sampler. Samplers remain cautious not to disturb the water to prevent plankton from exhibiting avoidance reactions. At deeper sites (depth of more than 0.7 m): water is collected by horizontally towing a plankton net with a typical opening of 0.5m diameter and a 61 μm pore size over 20 m or more if possible, to catch the spatial heterogeneity Once the organisms accumulate in the net, the material is rinsed with Milli-Q water and transferred into a 150 mL bottle. The exact volume of water that was filtered or trapped is recorded on the sample label and in field notes, as this information is necessary for later quantification. The sample is preserved using 4% buffered formaldehyde (or ethanol, if chosen as an alternative preservative) to maintain organismal integrity until laboratory processing. During transport, the sample is kept cool and protected from light, and is then stored at 4 °C in the laboratory to ensure optimal preservation prior to analysis.
        <para>All major European Union (EU) policies recognise the key role of wetlands to achieve the EU objectives regarding climate neutrality, biodiversity protection, zero-pollution, flood protection, and circular economy. Therefore, assessing the current extent and state of European wetlands, their current and potential greenhouse gases (GHG) profile and their medium to long-term mitigation capacity through restoration, or other measures, are key priorities of the European Union to tackle climate change. Led by the University of Aveiro, the Horizon project RESTORE4Cs (Modelling RESTORation of wEtlands for Carbon pathways, Climate Change mitigation and adaptation, ecosystem services, and biodiversity, Co-benefits) will assess the role of restoration action on wetlands capacity in terms of climate change mitigation and a wide range of ecosystem services using an integrative socio-ecological systems approach.</para>
