Long-term monitoring of rocky intertidal and subtotal communities at Calafuria, Tuscany

This monitoring program has been active for over 35 years at Calafuria on the Tuscan mainland, focusing on rocky intertidal and shallow subtotal communities of algae and invertebrates. Rocky intertidal algae and invertebrates are sampled using visual estimates of percent cover or counts in quadrants of 20x20 cm. Benthic subtidal communities are sampled visually in quadrants of 20x20 cm. The aim is to assess long-term ecological trends in coastal reef habitats of the NW Mediterranean Sea. Observed taxa include Rhodophyta, Ochrophyta, Chlorophyte, Polychaeta, Crustacea and Echinodermata.
