EDP Foz-Tua: Dipper (Cinclus cinclus) (point counts) - Ecological Monitoring Program [2013-16]

The dataset contains records of the Dipper (Cinclus cinclus) (Aves) and other riparian birds collected in the Tinhela river (Tua sub-basin) and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program (2012-17) of the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in the spring of 2013, and in the and winter and spring of 2014-2016, during field visits to six count points located in the riverbed of the Tinhela river, both in the area affected by the dam, near the mouth, and upstream. All observations were made with binoculars and/or telescopes. These point counts aimed to replace the linear transects of the regular program for this species, whenever these could not be performed due to security or logistic reasons. Therefore, they were set in the initial point of the transect they replaced. A total of 40 observations of four species (including the Dipper) were recorded.

Abstract

The dataset contains records of the Dipper (Cinclus cinclus, Aves) and other riparian bird species collected in point countss along the Tinhela River valley and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected between April 2013 and June 2016 during field visits to six sampling points with favourable habitats for the Dipper. These point counts aimed to replace the linear transects of the regular program for this species, whenever these could not be performed due to security or logistic reasons. Therefore, they were set in the initial point of the transect they replaced. The occurrence of the target and associated taxa (riparian birds) was documented through 40 observations of Cinclus cinclus (5), Motacilla cinerea (29), Motacilla alba (4), Cettia cetti (1) and Alcedo atthis (1).

Funding

The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A.

Study Area Description

Descriptor

The study was conducted in the river Tinhela, in the sub-basin of river Tua affected by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam (Tinhela mouth), and in areas upstream. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for the Dipper in the riverbed of Tinhela river, up to 10 km from the mouth.

Design Description

Description

The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the distribution patterns and abundances of the Dipper in the Tinhela river, an important area for this species in the Tua sub-basin, to assess the potential effects of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dan, during the dam construction (2011-2015), and during/after the flooding (2017).

Sampling

Study Extent

The data were collected in the riverbeds of the Tinhela river (river Tua sub-basin) (Northeast Portugal), up to 10 km from the mouth, in the municipality of Murça.

Sampling Description

Sampling was designed to cover the main habitats for the Dipper and other riparian birds along the Tinhela valley affected by the Foz-Tua dam (the mouth) and upstream. A total of six count points was established along the river Tinhela, in the starting point of a corresponding linear transect. All points were sampled once in winter and 1-2 times in the reproductive period (spring), in the early morning or late afternoon. Each sampling point was surveyed for 30 minutes. Species identification and assessment of age and sex (when possible) were made “in loco”, with the help of appropriate field guides.
