      <para>This dataset inlcludes data of total cell density, total cell biomass and of taxonomical composition of phytoplankton from 49 samples collected troughout a laboratory experiment lasted 15 days and performed in the facilities of University of Sassari in July 2024. This phytoplankton community origins from Cabras Lagoon (Sardinia, Western Mediterranean). Among the total 49 samples, 24 samples were incubated in laboratory at environmental temperature (27°C), and among these, 6 samples included mesozooplankton as apical predators, 6 samples inlcuded only microzooplankton as apical predators. Other 24 samples were incubated in laboratory under warming (32°C), and among these, 6 samples included mesozooplankton as apical predators, 6 samples inlcuded only microzooplankton as apical predators. The lasting 1 sample is the sample collected in the field and represents the starting phytoplankton community incubated.</para>

        <description>Two natural plankton communities were collected from Bidighinzu Lake and Cabras Lagoon and they were incubated separately in laboratory at an increased temperature treatment, in presence and in absence of mesozooplankton. The experiment was carried out for about three consecutive weeks in summer season. Water samples from Bidighinzu Lake and Cabras Lagoon were part sieved in situ with a 200 μm mesh to remove mesozooplankton, and thereafter transferred immediately to the laboratory for incubation in semi-transparent plastic buckets at two water temperatures: (i) the control, the present-day summer mean water temperature; (ii) at a +5 °C increased temperature compared to the control units. For each incubated plankton community, the two temperature conditions were applied in triplicate units filled with about 30 L of the mesh filtered water (i.e. 3 buckets under the control temperature and 3 buckets under the +5 °C treatment), and in triplicate units filled with about 30 L of the no mesh filtered water (i.e. 3 buckets under the control temperature and 3 buckets under the +5 °C treatment), resulting in 12 incubation units in total for each ecosystem.</description>

        <description>Phytoplankton was analysed according to the Utermöhl technique. Density was determined from 2% acid Lugol’s solution fixed sub-samples using an inverted light microscope at 100x, 200x and 400x magnification. The counts were done in an adequate number of fields, counting at least 400 individuals. For species identification, fresh samples will be also observed, aiming to reach the highest certain taxonomic level. Density (cell L-1) and total carbon content (μg C L-1) were calculated.</description>
