Method Step
- Description
-
This dataset focuses on zooplankton functional traits from the European Arctic, emphasizing species from the Norwegian Arctic (Barents Sea, Amundsen Basin, Nansen Basin). Taxa were selected based on species list of recent Arctic datasets. Systematic literature searches were conducted using Web of Science and Google Scholar, using Boolean keyword searches for traits like body size, feeding mode, and reproduction and subsequently applying a snowball method. Due to the high number of possible choices for a few well-studied species, the authors prioritised robust studies, clearly reported data in tables, and were the most straightforward to interpret. Data were harmonized using standardized ontologies and adhering to FAIR principles.
Sampling
- Study Extent
-
Systematic literature searches were conducted using Web of Science and Google Scholar, using Boolean keyword searches for traits like body size, feeding mode, and reproduction and subsequently applying a snowball method.
- Sampling Description
-
Arctic bounding box, with occasional records from temperate areas and the Southern Ocean.
qualityControl
- Description
-
Taxonomic validation has been conducted via WoRMS taxon match validation tool to confirm the validity and current nomenclature, with additional verification using the Arctic Register of Marine Species (ARMS) and the Biodiversity of Marine Planktonic Copepods database where necessary.

Passive Ambush Feeding refers to an ambush mechanism where feeders passively encounter and intercept food items based on their movement. There is no remote detection of food, and no active responses from the feeder, other than processing the food item once it has been encountered.

Active Ambush Feeding refers to an ambush mechanism where feeders encounter and intercept food items that come within their reach. Once detected, typically through mechanosensory, chemosensory cues, or by hydrodynamic disturbances, the feeder rapidly strikes to capture the food.

Particle feeding
- Definition
-
Particle feeding refers to a feeding strategy where organisms consume particulate organic matter, such as detritus, plankton, or suspended particles, from the surrounding environment. This strategy involves the detection and capture of particles using hydromechanical or chemical cues. The interaction with particles is often brief and transient, as organisms may visit aggregates, consume what they can, and then leave. The feeding behavior may be independent of particle concentration, relying instead on sensory mechanisms to locate and process the particles.
