This dataset was generated within a monitoring program conducted in 2024 with a monthly sampling frequency, as part of the PRIN 2022 project “FUTURE – a warmer Future world: effects on plankton commUnities and paThogens in mediterranean vUlneRable Ecosystems” (grant no. 202252YWFC). It includes zooplankton abundance (ind. m⁻³) for each identified taxon. Zooplankton data were obtained using a traditional microscopy-based approach, with morfological identification at species level when it was possible and counting performed under light microscopy. Additional information, including life stage and planktonic life-history group (meroplankton or holoplankton), is provided where available. Data were collected at three sampling stations in Cabras Lagoon, positioned along a salinity gradient ranging from the lagoon’s marine inlet (Station 1) to its freshwater inflow (Station 3), with Station 2 representing intermediate environmental conditions.

<description>Zooplankton organisms were sampled monthly throughout 2024 at three stations in Cabras Lagoon (Sardinia, Italy) along a salinity gradient from the marine inlet (station 1) to the freshwater inflow (station 3), with station 2 representing intermediate conditions. Due to the lagoon’s shallow depth (~2 m), samples were collected using horizontal net tows conducted 0.30–0.50 m below the surface with an 80 µm mesh net. Nets were towed at a known speed for a fixed duration to calculate the filtered volume. Samples were immediately preserved in 70% ethanol and later analyzed by microscopy for taxonomic identification and abundance estimation. A 10% subsample of the total volume was examined to determine zooplankton abundance and community composition.</description>

Global warming is altering the dynamic and structure of aquatic ecosystems. The Mediterranean region is considered as one of the most sensitive areas regarding global warming and Mediterranean artificial lakes and coastal lagoons are considered particularly vulnerable environments that deserve attention as they provide fundamental goods and ecosystem services. Temperature rise is expected to cause plankton biodiversity loss and to favour the selection of smaller-sized organisms and pathogenic bacteria. This may produce strong alteration in the food web efficiency and energy flux in artificial lakes and coastal lagoons and, consequently, on the all related goods and services, such as good quality of water for agriculture and drinking in artificial lakes or fishing in lagoons. The main objective of this project is to investigate the effects of the forecasted climate warming on Mediterranean natural plankton communities, including several trophic levels, from bacteria to mesozooplankton. To increase knowledge on the ecological responses of Mediterranean aquatic ecosystems to warming, two different natural plankton communities from a Mediterranean artificial lake and a coastal lagoon have been considered in this project. Project goals have been addressed by running a laboratory experiment and a field monitoring activity. The laboratory experiment allowed to directly investigate the entire plankton community responses to warming under experimentally controlled conditions. In addition, the field activity in each ecosystem also allowed to investigate the entire plankton community dynamics over the seasonal variations of temperature. Moreover, for investigating effects of warming on biodiversity, we applied two different approaches to analyse the field and experimental samples: i) a traditional approach, such as optical microscopy and flow cytometry, and ii) a more advanced technological approach, such as the Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS).
