EDP Foz Tua: Black Wheatear (Oenanthe leucura) (Aves) - Ecological Monitoring Program [2012-2017]

The dataset contains records of black Wheatear (Oenanthe leucura) (Aves, Muscicapidae) collected in plots along the lower Tua River valley and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in May 2012 and between January and September 2013-2017, during field visits to the known area of occurrence of the target species in the lower Tua valley, in a 5-km buffer around the river itself. The occurrence of the target taxa was documented through 635 observations of the species, in 155 events.

Abstract

The dataset contains records of black Wheatera (Oenanthe leucura) (Aves, Muscicapidae) collected in plots along the lower Tua River valley and included in the Ecological Monitoring Program of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, promoted by EDP – Energias de Portugal, S.A. Data were collected in May 2012 and between January and September 2013-2017, during field visits to the known area of occurrence of the target species in the lower Tua valley, in a 5-km buffer around the river itself. Funding

The work was funded by EDP - Energias de Portugal, S.A.

Study Area Description

Descriptor

The study was conducted in part of the sub-basin of river Tua affected by the Foz-Tua Hydroelectric Dam. The sampling was centered in suitable habitats for the Black Wheatear in a 5 km radius buffer around the future reservoir banks and up to 22 km from the Tua mouth.

Design Description

Description

The objective of the study was to monitor changes in the distribution patterns, abundances and reproduction of the Black Wheatear in the area of the Foz Tua Hydroelectric Dam, during the dam construction (2011-2016), and in the subsequent flooding of the river valley (2016-2017).

Sampling

Study Extent

The data were collected within a 5-km buffer around the Tua lower valley (Northeast Portugal), up to 22 km from the mouth, in the municipalities of Alijó, Carrazeda de Ansiães and Murça

Sampling Description

Sampling was designed to cover the main area of reproduction of the Black Wheatear along the lower Tua River valley affected by the Foz-Tua dam, particularly in the last 7 km of the river, where most couples have their territories.

The area was intensively searched, and all known or potential territories were visited once (winter and summer/autumn) or twice (spring). Singing playbacks (five minutes each) were performed to enhance the response of the birds. Species identification and assessment of age and sex (when possible) were made “in loco”, with the help of appropriate field guides.
