Phytoplankton determinations were carried out following Lund et al. (1958). Measurements of algal cells and colonies were carried out by image analysis (Image Pro Plus): calculation of surface area, volume and measurements of GALD were done each time for all the species, collecting about 28.000 data, using the equations provided by Sun Liu (2003) and Hillebrand et al. (1999).

The sampling design was as follows:19 times, 1 sampling site. Samples were collected during the 2002. Samples were gathered fortnightly from March until October, monthly in January, November and December, at the station of Ghiffa, corresponding to the deepest point of the lake.
