This dataset provides a broad perspective and information on taxonomic and morphological (shape and size)structure of phytoplankton communities, along coastal marine area of Salento peninsula (Adriatic and Ionian sea).

Phytoplankton composition and size distribution in the Lago Maggiore (Italy) was analysed in detail measuring the main morphological parameters of the algal cells. This data set allowed to evaluate the morphological plasticity of many species across the seasonal succession.
